If you're looking for a free printable place value game, Place Value Yahtzee gives students a fun way to practice building, reading, and comparing numbers.
One thing I learned quickly as a teacher was that the best classroom games didn't need complicated directions.
When a game felt familiar, students could usually jump in much more quickly. I spent less time explaining how to play—and students could focus more of their attention on the math.
That's one of the reasons I've always loved taking familiar games and giving them a math twist. Students get the fun and strategy of a game they recognize, but every turn gives them meaningful practice with the skill we're working on.
Place Value Yahtzee is a perfect example.
With every roll, students have to think strategically about where to place each digit as they build their number. They're practicing place value, but it feels like a game rather than another round of practice problems.
I've included score cards for five different versions of the game: 3-digit numbers, 4-digit numbers, 5-digit numbers, 6-digit numbers, and decimals. You can choose the version that best fits your students—or use different versions with different students for easy differentiation.
What Is Place Value Yahtzee?
Place Value Yahtzee is a dice game that gives students practice building, reading, and comparing numbers. Players roll dice, decide which dice to keep and which to re-roll based on their roll and the available categories on their score card, and then use all of the digits to build the greatest number they can for one of those categories.
The goal is to earn the most points by building a greater number than their opponent in as many categories as possible.
Before You Play
Choose the Place Value Yahtzee score card that best matches your students. There are five versions included.
Print one score card per player. There are four score cards on each printed page. Gather the correct number of dice, pencils, and an optional cup for rolling the dice.
Place Value Yahtzee can be played with 2-4 players.
How to Play
A Few Things to Know:
If you want to keep all of the dice from your first roll, you can skip your second roll and move directly to Step 3.
Categories can be filled in any order, but each category can only be used once. If you can't build a number that fits an open category, place an X beside one open category instead.
Continue taking turns until every player has filled all 9 categories with either a number or an X.
How to Win
Once everyone has filled all 9 categories, compare the score cards one category at a time.
For each category, the player with the greatest number earns 1 point. If a player has an X in that category, they don't earn a point. If there's a tie, both players earn the point.
One extra place value challenge I like to add: Before earning a point, students have to read their number aloud correctly. If they can't read it correctly, they don't earn the point—even if their number is the greatest!
Repeat for all 9 categories. The player with the most points wins! If there's a tie, have the tied players do one final roll to see who can build the greatest number.
